At least for lettuce, which is grown in the Salinas valley, what happens is, workers will remove the lettuce head (with a knife) and place it in a carton or a movable conveyor, where it will be examined for its condition, then wrapped in plastic and subsequently chilled for retail sale (or more properly for a middleman's purchase for wholesalers who will sell the stuff to markets). Then, McDonalds or a similar operation would send out a mechanized harvester to collect the scraps for sale as "fresh produce," specifically for the fast food market. It's not like you cut open a head of lettuce in your restaurant (sic) to make a layer for your BigMac. The stuff that was left behind is what goes into your sandwich. Farmworkers were NOT unskilled braseros. They are trained to discard low quality vegetables for the market and leave the rest. My point is only that legal or not, farmworkers provide a link in the chain that keeps our food safe. But mostly they do the manual labor of selecting and sorting. By the way, Agent Orange has also reduced the inspection duties and personnel of the USDA.

Today I listened to The Kaiser Chiefs, Talking Heads, and Mingus' posthumously recorded Epitaph.

I shredded a great many heads of lettuce for Hardees back in the 70's. My daughter says they still use heads of lettuce, but apparently the quality is lower now and they use leaves instead of shreds.

Wait ... Trump actually said "We’re going to have to use a lot of common sense ..."???? What hypocrisy!!! He has NO common sense -- never has, never will! Who does he think he's kidding? Great 'toon ... I hope Pizza Rat doesn't get squished by the wheels of that truck he's under!!! Enjoy your time in California, Clay!

Trump is crazy, so it's no surprise he's giving crazy orders.

He's got half the country so filled with contradictory ideas that they believe they are 'policies', and they ignore the contradictions., And that's how he's treating ICE. Sucks to be them. Wonder how many have quit this year?

And Clay, white people don't have a problem with working on farms. It's just too damn far to get there from where people live now. We used to have tenant farms (I was born on a tenant farm and lived/worked there till I was out of school and started working for Peabody Coal) and part of the pay on a tenant farm is a roof over your head. If you want to know what the pay with a house ran to, there's an old DoA chart for that, IIRC, it was around 300 a month in 1960 with a roof included. Keep in mind, that was outhouse and well water living, and my father was the boss of the farming operation, which was mostly tobacco and sheep, but switched to cattle after the wool market went to nothing with the development of artificial fibers. We managed to afford to put in a pump and septic tank about the time I turned twelve. While I was in school, I managed to find a wall mounted electric heater and installed that, and that got them moving away from coal/oil heat and to electric. The fumes from the old stuff was awful.

I got a little nostalgic there, sorry.

Anyhow, my point was that everyone working on those farms was white. My wife's folks were farmers (my folks were considered 'rich' because they had maybe 8 or 10 thousand a year by the mid sixties, wife's folks were less than half that) and nearly everyone in the area was farming.

White people just mostly don't live in the farm country now, neither does anyone else. There are very few tenant houses still standing. The big farms that bought up everything knocked everything flat and just go for miles. They only want people a few weeks a year at most. Migrants work under those conditions, because they don't live in the US and don't have to pay US prices.

If Trump really wanted to leave a real legacy, he'd expand the guest worker program to meet the actual demand. OFC, he'll never do it, because it would mean going against Miller the Hater. I think Trump is scared of Miller.

You're being generous in believing that the turd-toddler's afraid of baby-goebs. They are kindred spirits in their xenophobia. The turd-toddler's neurons made a brief connection that non-white folks are critical to white agri-businesses because of the potential loss of grift money from those maga-sponsors. But turd-toddler's simple neural network overloaded (probably on fries) and went back to the default of spouting hateful crap about deporting non-white immigrants. (I have yet to hear about any white Brits, Aussies or Irish being rounded up and deported).

In the turd-toddler's and baby-goebs perfect world, America is only for (white) Americans. Only white folks ... poor white folks ... would be the field workers on farms, do the housekeeping in hotels and serve at mickey-dees in the USA ... the same poor white folks who are gonna lose their ACA healthcare, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, etc... after DOGE & the Repugs in Congress reconcile their evil "big beautiful bill".

If they had their way, the maga-propagandanists, after eliminating DEI everywhere, would rewrite history to claim that all the black slaves came from the Congo or Rwanda. Then he'd grift some funds to pay either country to take back all "the blacks" the same way he shipped the "criminal gangsters" to El Salvador. He'll then try to sell or trade Puerto Rico for Greenland and use it as a precursor to revoking the citizenship of all latinos to send them back to their "home countries". All Asians would go to North Korea after he and Kim exchange some more live lletters. Indigenous people? The genocidal health policies of the brain-wormer would wipe out the remaining members of the 500+ tribes that were the original inhabitants of North America.

Any exemptions for farm and hotel workers will be fleeting. The gross incompetence of this regime will hurt both agribusinesses and tourism in the USA and they will blame non-white workers, especially non-white migrant workers. Resentment already exists in the tech world for Asians, especially south Asians. K-boy's demand for H1B workers will be ignored now that he's on the outs. Maybe the CEOs that are still kissing (name your body part) will be more successful at getting the turd-toddler to focus on a decent work program for migrants with specialized skills for programming farmer and housekeeping robots, because there aren't enough white folks to fill all the jobs needed to make their version of America great... again.?

Oh, they are kindred, but Trump just wants a photo op and to move on. Miller SAVAGELY wants every dark skinned person he can manage to deport GONE and doesn't care if they are legal or not.

It's the difference between obsession and dithering.

Very disheartening news from the ultimate flip-flopper: it seems industries like farms/agriculture, hotels, restaurants and meat packing would be exempt from raids to help businesses if not workers. Now this. The best I can do is my best “Roy Kent” [IYKYK] to the news that deportation quotas matter even more than the economy https://wapo.st/43PPwus

Clay, you hit the proverbial nail on the head “Percentage-wise, natural-born Americans commit more crimes than people in this nation illegally.” And I could never understand why Trump would shoot himself in the foot by deporting undocumented workers that he no doubt employs at his hotels and resorts, just like the undocumented tech workers he hired to set up DJT and his meme coin scams.

Not playing with the full deck he’d like some to believe…

Trump does H2-B's and undocumented. Maybe all H2-B's now, since he's POTUS he can jump to the head of the line. H2-B's don't bother me.

I'm very much against the current way H1-B's are used, they're used to drive down the wages for entry level people in IT. "Supposedly" they are to be used to fill positions you can't find an American for, in reality there are classes in how to create "unfillable" positions so they can hire a cheaper H1-B. (You want video, I can find it again.)

Change the H1-B so that a company had to be responsible for the person for five years after they enter the country, and sponsor them for those five years NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE WORKING FOR, and suddenly the H1-B really would be restricted to PhD level and similar.

Hotels are notorious for paying low wages unless forced otherwise. The American Hotel & Lodging Assn not long ago was quoted stating the hotel industry is at around 67% of preCOVID staffing. In a fb group begun in early 2020 for all those hotels let go (and now with 60k+ members) has people constantly accepting than leaving the line jobs in hotels.

Hotels that first started offering the “option” of no daily guest room housekeeping under the guise of earth-friendly now has too few people to do the literally back-breaking work. Much like agriculture. Meat-packing.

All this while hotel owners and brands lobbied for exemptions from raids not for people but (shock/surprise) profits.

Will I live to see the end of this nightmare? My 🎱 is stuck and it appears to have me …

Enjoy San Diego haven't been there in years. Try to visit the zoo with its pandas and the Wild Animal Park. The WAP has an excellent Condor exhibit, and these are both excellent spots for seeing great animals. Old Town is also a good spot for tourists to visit. The other one I can't think of at this moment, but I will email you when I do.

You asked about tracking ICE raids - they have deliberately made it difficult to get data - the est I could find was this but it is useless unless you have name

https://locator.ice.gov/odls/#/search

or you can find broad vanilla data https://www.ice.gov/statistics

Big lips noem is deliberately making it difficult to track people. Apparently social media is the go-to source of information these days.
