You can just send a thank to the editors for their time and honestly. And point out that you have a substack where they can keep enjoying your work.

Oh, I write back and thank them. There's a link to my Substack in every email I send.

This same issue was addressed by Mike Peterson in his blog this morning on The Daily Cartoonist. It really goes to show the fear that these right-wing thugs have instilled in everyone who doesn't agree with them - editors, politicians, neighbors, and even family members. It is very frightening that the powers that be will not do something about this; I really can't see this turning around and I think all hell will be breaking loose in another month. I very much respect your courage and integrity, Clay. Ditto for many of your colleagues as well.

That must be very discouraging, Clay, to get those responses. I'm glad you don't give up!! Enjoy Montreal and keep drinking the Smart Water to counter-act all the other crap. ;)

These letters just make me sad. It's the reason we don't dare put up a Harris/Walz sign in our rural Oregon yard. We're afraid of MAGATs shooting at our house, our dogs, us. But hey, my latest positive outlook is that I can count every house with no political sign out here as someone like us: the frightened majority.

Makes me feel real bad for all those editors stuck in jobs where they have to bury their true beliefs just to keep their jobs. You're much luckier!

I think it’s sad and ridiculous that political cartoonists are asked to “tone down” their commentary on current events, for fear of offending people. And I’m also sick of having conversations with people who bemoan the “media,” and insist they should report “both sides” of a story. I always say, “But the truth has only one side.” Then they say, “I just don’t want the media telling me what to think.” If that’s what their takeaway from proper news reporting is (including political cartoonists), then they’re lost anyway. I blame cable news, and the prime time line-ups that report true news stories and then introduce a panel to spin the story. People no longer know the difference between news and opinion.

Keep up the good work, Clay, and travel safely.

By the way, did you know that both Trump and Harris are expected to be attending the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner on October 17, next week? As guests of His Eminence Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop (and Grand PooBah) of New York. 6:30 p.m. White Tie. Be there or be square.

Thanks for reminding us about the Al Smith Dinner.

I am looking forward to this meeting between The Prosecutor and The Convicted Felon. (However, considering how he feels about a Second Debate, I would not be surprised if The Convicted Felon is a no-show for the dinner.)

I expect that it will go something like this (from 2016), on steroids. 😉
