Good rant! Keep it up! And yes, the Washington Post, to which I have been subscribing for over 25 years, is slowly turning into some version of Foxington Post. Then? Adding Michael Ramirez?

Clay, I admire your integrity and your beliefs. You should not bow down to the ones that don't understand that you're your own man and do what you think you should. I applaud you!

Stay truthful. I adore your work.

If that editor wants balance he should hire a Trump sycophant cartoonist to run next to your cartoons. Also, that is pretty chicken shit to not pay you.

Good for you for standing up for yourself, Clay, and for what is right. You ARE worthy of getting paid for your work! Even if they aren't happy with it, if they publish it they should pay you for it. Every. Damn. Time!

Keep the faith. Stay true to who you are. Glad you could rant and rave about some stupid and dishonest editor, much better than ignoring it or going ballistic.

I'd love to see a listing of who and how much, maybe a blog? Might want to send a nice note to publications beforehand with an offer that they can pay, they can correct errors or they can suffer the humiliation (I doubt it would have much impact, but SOME might pay).

Last...if I owned a paper I would take the middle page of the front section, on the left is lefty cartoons and opinion pieces and on the right.... From time to time I stick in an editorial (maybe in a box) and would have to think about where to put it. And then sit back, because people LIKE to read and respond. Would think it would attract readers. But it would require a lot of work to find the correct balance.

"Clay does not work and play well with others"... hey editors... paying and buying the occasional beer would help!!! Speaking from experience ... Clay is a fast talking, intelligent pussy cat..again... beer helps. KEEP IT UP... so many of us LOVE and admire your insight and "how the hell did he think of that" ideas. Also... snark is under rated talent ... embrace it (but not when you are trying to get paid).

Clay,

You know I am one of your most ardent supporters, so I hope you never give in. You are the only cartoonist I know who publishes daily and through your blog have become a part of my everyday life.

BTW, I gave up my WAPO subscription a while back

What total BS you are having to deal with, Clay. You create editorial cartoons that by their very nature are opinion pieces and meant to make people think. I love your blog in that it creates the context and thinking behind your very creative art work. If the paper wants "balance" why not add one of the reliably MAGAt cartoonists as contrast - after all, since they don't pay, it would be free and "balanced". /s Of course, it wouldn't actually be "balanced" because the MAGAt offerings are primarily based upon made up talking points with little to no basis in fact.

I don't think they're talking about balance as in left and right. I think he meant balance as in no opinions or politics.

So they wish to employ a first-rate editorial cartoonist to not create editorial cartoons. Brilliant. Sounds like the editor is a moron.

“But I wanted to handle it professionally while I was still pissed off at the nerve of a newspaper, especially a non-paying paper, telling me he needs more “balance.””

You could have just said that if he wants you to provide more “balance” (even though you’re not gonna do it anyway), he should consider paying his “balance” with you first. 😉

Hardly a rant, wanting to not be dictated to by companies stealing your work after not paying their bills. It's very cool to read your words here. Love your integrity. Keep cartooning and exposing reality.
