I cried when Carter was not re-elected. I was 17 years old, in college and studying to be an environmental scientist. I told my mom that American's would live to regret doing that. Carter's life after his presidency is that of a model citizen and statesman. Because of him I value democracy, fair elections, the work of Habitat for Humanity. I have used the moral fiber of President Carter as the standard to judge every president after him. They all have a long way to go in their lifetimes and some will never get within light-years of Carter's stature as a human being and the President of the United States of America. His memory will always be a blessing for me and many others.
I always respected Jimmy Carter for his kindness and honesty. He had a good heart, loved and respected his family, and walked his talk. RIP, Pres. Carter. Despite being an atheist, I hope there's a Heaven and that you get there - if anyone gets there, it should be you!
"We shall not see his like again." Unfortunately, Shakespeare is probably right. Did you know he started the Dept of Education, FEMA, appointed record numbers of blacks, women, other minorities to government jobs, warned against materialism and consumerism in the country, established full relations with China, the Panama Canal treaty, advocating for energy conservation, and a whole slew of other accomplishments? All of it overshadowed by Teddy Kennedy and his ego and St. Ronnie (and his deal with Iran). I never forgave the D party for letting Teddy Kennedy take over the party instead of rallying around Carter. The man was ahead of his time in so many ways, especially in civil rights and advancing the dignity of all people.
Thanks for doing a cartoon for President Carter. I wish we had listened to him about conserving energy and possibly slowing down climate change. While I'm wishing, I hope whoever comes after Trump embodies his kindness and thoughtfulness. The world needs more of that.
Thanks, Clay. For your intentional drawing and this. A nice bit of humor with a great depiction of Pres Carter. He was a mensch and his run against Reagan was for me the beginning of style over substance. Arguments over the years say it was Kennedy v Nixon. Maybe. Now honesty and integrity matter little. May Pres Carter’s memory be for a blessing and his life a model for all to be kinder and work for tikkun olam.
Jimmy Carter is the reason I don’t vote R, D, or I - I vote for who I think has the best character, because good people do good things. Jimmy Carter was a perfect role model for politicians, but sadly, politics seems to attract those whose character is self-serving. Here’s to hoping we can get money out of politics, and people with good character in !! Someday….
Thank you for this perfect toon on a perfect human being. You are also lucky to have bumped into him. And he gets out of here before all hell breaks loose. I’m happy for him.
What a great cartoon! Also, I absolutely LOVE that someone was able to dig up that photo of you as a kid. What a great thing to do! That was awesome. I have to say that thinking of what a great human being Carter was, it made me want to cry about monster we are about to have as president. There couldn't be a greater contrast between good and evil people. Clay, thank you for all that you do.
I read somewhere that Carter left us one last gift. The flag at half-mast. Honoring the passing of a US President. Will the flag be at half-mast during Trump's swearing in? If so, how appropriate! Thanks again Jimmy for everything.
You are so right that the flag being at half-staff will serve two things honoring Carter and the sorrow that Herr Trump is bringing to this country with his swearing-in.
I love the expressions here, with God Almighty and even the Devil looking bemused, and Jimmy Carter the Reconciler clearly master of the situation. And yes, as one who was of voting age then, I’m glad you chose this theme.

I think it's perfect. Great toon. R.I.P. to a truly great man.
Thank you for your acknowledgement of President Carter, the epitome of a kind and loving person. If only more people where more like him.

Him digging up that photo really surprised me.

Oops ... I meant "half-staff" ... The flag at half-staff (for 30 days).
