BRAVO on your response to that editor! 👏👏👏👏👏👏 You at least understand the (traditional, at least) purpose of an opinion page, to present a variety of viewpoints to give readers food for thought and a broad understanding of different perspectives. God knows what today's editors think the purpose should be. Also, even though you have a definite point of view on politics, that doesn't stop you from asking some damn fine questions of all sides. Talk about food for thought.
P.S. - I'll be wearing my Pizza Rat T to the Minnesota State Fair on Monday. 🍕🐀
To quote something I heard my dad say back in the 70s, in an after-work rant to my mom: He's got his head so far up his ass, he needs a glass stomach to see where he's going.
I hate all this BS about redistricting mid decade. Part of me understands the drive for my state to try and even the field since Texas went ahead and passed their new map but it breaks my fair play heart.
Hey, Clay, Glad you didn't get what was going around. I still need the new COVID vaccine as well, and I have a few years on you. Having received the vaccine, you will keep it from being a bad nightmare and will recover faster. I have lucked out so far and not had it at all.
👍 What you said about not getting as sick if you have the vaccine is true! Also with the yearly flu vaccination that is tailored to what scientists expect. Or at least it used to be.
Morning, Jean, I used to work in doctors' offices. I have never had a flu shot, and at 77 not starting now. I do get the vaccines, so I don't catch the hard-core stuff. I have a very healthy immune system, and I hope to stay that way. Have a good week.
🩷I totally understand that it is a personal choice! And that some people like you definitely don’t need the help. Unfortunately, my hubby and I have both had severe chronic illnesses that affect our lung function. My hubby was in the ICU in 2000 for 3 weeks in a medically induced coma after a botched diagnosis by his internist that required emergency abdominal surgery and having 10” of his colon removed. He suffered sepsis, MRSA, fluid in his lungs and blood clots. He was on a ventilator that did 100% of his breathing for 2 of those weeks. The doctors said it was miracle he lived. He spent 6 more weeks in a regular hospital room with a tracheotomy still doing 50% of his breathing. He already suffered from severe allergies and asthma. Every year like clock work he got the flu in the winter, which turned into bronchitis which turned into pneumonia. I have a lot of similar respiratory problems and am all too familiar with hospital rooms and heavy duty breathing treatments. I also have an autoimmune disease. So when flu shots started becoming more readily available our doctors recommended we both get one, even though we were well below the suggested age. We also got pneumonia vaccines. We still both get the flu and bronchitis, but it is definitely not as bad and we usually avoid the hospital. Now that we are reaching our late 60’s and have more health problems we do whatever we can to help our bodies. It doesn’t always work. My husband spent all day last Thursday getting tests for a really bad cough and wheezing. First the Urgent Care and then they sent him to the Emergency Room. These days even “good” insurance restricts testing. They wanted to admit him. The insurance company said NO! The doctors asked to at least authorize a CT Scan to check for blood clots. The insurance company said NO! So basically after hours there with just a flu and Covid test (both) negative, and a chest Xray that was hard to be sure about because of all the scarring in his lungs, and some blood tests they sent him home with a referral to his cardiologist. And a discharge note to call 911 if he got worse or developed any other symptoms. The first appointment he could get with his cardiologist was for tomorrow (Tuesday), 5 days after the ER. The receptionist he talked to apologized, but told him their office is inundated with patients like him that need to be seen ASAP. And to …. yeah, we know, call 911 if he gets worse or develops more symptoms. So, once again I am not going to pressure anyone who either doesn’t trust vaccines or doesn’t feel they need them. Sorry about all the emotions in this! Please know they are not directed at you! I’m just a really worried wife who is disgusted with the healthcare insurance industry. So please have a great week! At least no matter what else is going on we can look forward to Clay’s next toon and blog! 💖
Sorry you and your husband aren't well. I hope you are both doing better soon. I'm in my late 70s and have a pacemaker and a hip replacement, and at some point may have to have the other one done. But those are the worst of the problems. I've been borderline diabetic for years and try to be careful most of the time, but sometimes you just want to enjoy life. Through most of my life, I was using the nearest military base for care, as my husband was in the AF for 20 years. Now I have a local doctor who sees me once a year, as needed, and a Cardiologist who also sees me once a year, but the pacemaker has a monitor on my nightstand, and every three months it sends the doctor and the company a report. It also texts me that it has sent the report and how much longer the battery will last. Technology is amazing.
Jean, I agree with everything you say and hope that your hubby recovers completely. These are scary times with emerging diseases and dysfunctional health departments at local, state and federal levels. Like you, I have co-morbidities that make me vulnerable, especially to respiratory illnesses. I understand some folks being vaccine-hesitant because of sensitivities to components of vaccines or not feeling the need because they have histories of resistance to infections due to strong immune systems. God bless them and good luck because immune systems can weaken depending on age, prior exposures, environmental and genetic stressors.
What I have problem with, are those folks who want to restrict/control the development and access to vaccines and treatments because of political and religious agendas that invariably harm minorities, marginalized populations, the working class and poor. I know of some registered Democrats (and many Republicans) who hated the mandated vaccines and made election choices on that single issue. Their "freedom" of choice butted up against community health policies and in some cases were manipulated by misinformation, deliberate disinformation and outright lies. I had cousins in the medical field whose religous beliefs had them choosing to ignore sound scientific advice and risk being fired from their jobs, while other religious cousins who were non-science essential workers that were pragmatic about their risks and being vaccinated.
People forget that there were multiple rounds of pandemics from the early twentieth century that wiped out hundreds and thousands of people in various parts of the world. It's one thing to choose to weigh one's own risk, but another thing when that person's choice removes not only the choice of others, but also greatly increases the harm. That's where all those "freedom" lovers lose my respect because my rights should be as valuable as theirs. Stay safe Claytoonzers!
I was like you after the election wondering how so many people could think he was a good president and concluding that Kamala Harris wasn't strong enough (read white and male) to do the hard work (read play and cheat at golf, dismantle health care and education, etc.).
In fact there are a lot of lazy Republicans (read rich and white) who don't give a shit about the quality of the government along with Magats who who want to keep it white and god fearing, as well as all the lazy ones who could care less.
Oh Alex how miserable you much feel. Unsure if you can take and if your prescribed Paxlovid. My spouse took it in ‘23 and it helped him feel better. I tried and had an allergic reaction and stopped. Tho I hope you don’t, get it, watch for symptoms of Long COVID. There’s little you can do so far to stop it. Just take things slowly and rest even when the task master implores you to do!
Clay - great toon and glad you’re well so far. Stay well. We need your humor, creativity & no fear of editors.
I've heard the hits, but never got into them, but I'll watch a documentary about almost anything, especially with music. I watched a documentary about Nickelback. It didn't make me like them. I also watched a documentary about NASCAR. Trust me when I say, I don't give two flips about NASCAR.
HBO/MAX has some awesome documentaries. We like to watch the National Geographic Channel ones through Disney+. We just got through a series on National Parks. We learned there are many different kinds of bears and they are everywhere! Some of them eat grass, apples, climb trees to get green acorns. And many other things we never knew. Beautiful scenery. 🎶 Disney+ also has quite a few documentaries about music, muscians, composers. We highly recommend the one about John Williams!! The man is a creative genius and unbelievably prolific.
I don’t have Netflix to watch the documentary, but I will definitely check out their music! I saw in the news that the National Guard in DC is going to start carrying weapons. With that happening I think something much worse than Kent State will happen in our capital soon.
I read an article on Saturday from a guy who had just returned to the DC area very recently from working elsewhere. He and his wife took the Metro downtown on Saturday (I think) to walk around, get some lunch, and enjoy the nice weather.
Downtown by The Mall and inside Union Station was a ghost town. He offered photos, too. Lincoln Memorial had four people in the photo. He and his wife spoke to a few of the tiny number of Guard people who were standing around. They all were very polite and explained that nothing was going on and hadn't been. Nobody was there. Yeah, they had their weapons, but were hardly carrying them at the ready for action. Restaurants were empty. All the businesses must be hurting now.
Since this fellow had photos and the like, it's hard not to believe his story. It's not what he expected, at all.
So, I'd guess that any confrontations will have to be provoked, umm, bigly.
Maybe that's why the Fear Franchise is expanding to Chicago next.
(Sorry for not having the link to that article. For some reason, I can't find it in my browser history.)
I need to watch that documentary. IIRC, they formed as a band after witnessing first hand the violence at Kent State. I can personally recommend their 2010 album Something For Everybody.
The reason voters are leaving the Democratic Party is because anti Trumpism is not a platform. The Democratic Party that appealed to the people of color and the blue color is fighting global warming, Medicare for all, and other socialist and ivory tower causes that don’t not resonate with their base and certainly not the young voters. They try to appeal to the educated and suburbanites. Half of the voting population is neither. Until the Democrats come up with a platform they will continue losing votes to the MAGA.
I truly try to understand how the issues cited are not everyone’s issues. How they are “ivory tower” issues when so many low/lower income homes are built in flood zones. Greta has mobilized many young people on those issues and ones that impact schooling, topics approved. I think there is for both parties’ a need for younger leaders and office holders who have experienced results of laws passed that hurt them. I believe they will learn more in the coming months. Thank you for four attention to these issues.
Your response addresses my points exactly. When you are on Medicaid and food stamp and can barely pay your rent, global warming is light years away from your cares. Those of you who have commented have a comfy life so you can think about the next level of self actualization. Referring to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. 40 million Americans are near poverty level.
Your assumptions are interesting about those here who you believe to have comfy lives. I make that assumption only about people who flaunt their wealth. The issues again cited - someone on Medicaid, food stamps who can barely pay rent are heavily impacted by everything. I’ll not try again except to ask please that you make no assumptions as I do not about you. Just like unseen obvious disabilities, you can’t judge far too many people by their outer layer or your preconceived ideas of their circumstances. I wish you good health and a safe roof over your head.
Cheating is how the GOP has functioned ever since Karl Rove came to power. Rove believed there were two elections, one in public and one in front of a judge they could get to throw out enough votes for the 'right' side to win.
Editors and idiots. Many writers have said those are synonyms. The dude you are talking about is obviously not a counter example.
I honestly believe that many, perhaps most news editors cannot tell the difference between actually offensive, pretend offensive and "I disagree with this opinion". That's not very smart.
As for COVID, I've seen people get into fights, actual fights, with Walmart employees who politely asked them to wear a mask. Life in Tennessee. I'm not going to miss this place when I retire and leave.
On the ligher side, I saw Mercury in the morning sky while walking the dogs. It's just bright enough to show through the morning glow just above the horizon. Venus and Jupiter were obvious as they were higher in the sky. Most people have never seen Mercury, as it's never very high above the horizon and is never far from the sun, maximum elevation would be something like 20 to 25 degrees, which isn't much, and it's never visible for more than a couple of weeks before it dives into the sun glare again.
Echoing the comments here - great response to that editor in Kansas…really????!!
On the election - the US has this weird thinking they support one party or the other their whole lives. And they follow the party of one issue - such as abortion, immigration or whatever. Americans cannot see the “whole” picture when it comes to a political candidate - President Biden, for example, is a Catholic who personally supports the no abortion stance but as President he looked at the people and decided what was best for everyone. Not easy but incredibly presidential !!! We the people - wow the founding fathers had something there!! Especially in George Washington and first few presidents who created the US Constitution and grappled over not acting like “a king”. Unfortunately racism is the bedrock of America - dare I say it? Slavery was the economic bedrock and the white person simply cannot have a non-white person doing better than them. There I said it. And the orange one tapped into that fear like a drug dealer supplying a junkie and the majority of US voters plugged into that mainline drug - twice!
FYI - the CDC data is a bit difficult to figure out but I found this on the World Health Organization site:
US Covid-19 hospitalization in the last 28 days - over 1,600,000 Covid-19 and 622 Covid-19 deaths. That is a huge number…….The best way to protect against Covid-19 is the latest vaccine which can reduce the severity of infection and, if you have had Covid-19 previously, treatments may not be as effective. Yes, I know there is someone who knows more than me, is an expert or whatever - say your piece - but basically vaccine and avoid infection if possible.
To steal from Gavin Newsom - it is not if we play hardball, it’s how we play hardball.
My mother never voted. She thought she was a republican though. Her daddy was. He died in 1961. Eisenhower was the last republican that didn't have baggage. I had her take a questionnaire on voting stances. She wound up being more liberal than me! That shocked me. When Mom was 15, she was sent to an unwed mother's home in Atlantic City. This was in the 50s. The fetus was too premature at birth and died a few days later. The horrific conditions at that home made Mom pro-choice. I am a registered Independent, since I believe in ideals and not parties. The fact that I have only voted for one republican in my entire life (local election, and I voted for her every term until she retired) speaks volumes about that party.
Neither my hubby or I are registered with any party. I am paranoid about it being on record. But we definitely vote for a candidate and not their particular party affiliation. I have voted for one Republican for a local city council position this year because only Republicans were running and he was the least crazy. Otherwise it’s Dems or Independents.
💔I am so sorry for what your mom went through. All the ghastly horrors of the “unwed mother” homes from that time are still coming to light. They were global. I am glad your mom was able to have you and I am sure you are a great delight and comfort. 💖❤️🩹
👍You make several really great and important points!
(1) You are right about the vaccine. And I don’t think people need a degree in science to understand it is a virus! Once you get it antibiotics will not help you. Yes, there are new and better treatments, but many of those need to be started immediately after you contract the infection which is before you start displaying symptoms.
(2)I am originally from Michigan and I had a lot of “Christian” friends there who voted for the 🍊Turd in 2016 solely based on the lie that he said he was anti-abortion! That one issue!! I stopped talking to all of them by the end of 2017. I am sure they all voted for him in 2024 too. I can’t understand people who have such a narrow minded view and refuse to look at any other issues.
Excellent toon and blog!! I am actually afraid to say anything against the Dems here because I wrote a long response to one of your subscribers after the cartoon “Welcome Back, Dead Donkey” because they really didn’t like it. I wrote about what I (personally) see wrong with the Dems as a party. I got blocked for it. I just hope they didn’t unsubscribe ~ not that I think what I say is that important. But the private message I got was 😳!
🤧Sending get well soon wishes to sweet and talented Alex!!
🕷️And I recognized the marking on the black widow spider this time! See, I can learn.
🪶I’ll close with a suggestion for the “bird•without•a•name”. First a clarification ~ is it a seagull? Remember that book ‘Jonathan Livingston Seagull”. I am sure that is copyrighted, but just to use it as an inspiration. Jonny? Nathan? Stan? Liverwurst? Livvy?
I never intended him to be a seagull, but you, my readers, decided he was. He was initially supposed to be a pigeon. Sometimes, I give him a day off and a different type of bird will take his spot.
BRAVO on your response to that editor! 👏👏👏👏👏👏 You at least understand the (traditional, at least) purpose of an opinion page, to present a variety of viewpoints to give readers food for thought and a broad understanding of different perspectives. 🎉Exactly what you said about the MF editor!! 🎉🎉
To quote something I heard my dad say back in the 70s, in an after-work rant to my mom: He's got his head so far up his ass, he needs a glass stomach to see where he's going.
Cheating is normal for the GOP. This toon and blog shows how.
Some people are just wired to cheat. No matter what. Even if they are already winning and already have all the unfair advantages possible.
To me, it's like whatever drives bazillionaires to *need* more. They have no reason other than a void they feel the need to fill.
I guess a lot of people are that way, wealthy and powerful or not.
Some people are just empty souls.
I hate all this BS about redistricting mid decade. Part of me understands the drive for my state to try and even the field since Texas went ahead and passed their new map but it breaks my fair play heart.
Hope Alex is soon on the mend.

Thank you for your kind thoughts for my husband. And for explaining much more clearly than I did. Stay healthy!
Good on you for your response to that editor, Clay!!! And another great cartoon! Glad you dodged the Covid bullet this time 'round.
Like your correspondence with that idiot from Kansas. You kept it classy while he was being a dick!

Can us Peezeheads have a sea gull AND a pigeon?! Pretty please with bird poop on top of 😊
