Ann Telnaes is a free press hero in my book! Jeff Bezos, on the other hand, is scum. I'm more glad than ever that I cancelled my subscription to WaPo back when they refused to allow their editorial staff to support Kamala Harris!
Bob Woodward still nominally has a pass into the WaPo newsroom, although his life is gathering book material for the next wincing look at presidents. I suspect he’ll soon be working on his own. Truthiness is strong in that one also.
Yup: hearing directly from the US President in early 2020 about a foreign virus coming soon and how dangerous it is... then watching said President repeatedly LIE publicly to the country about how serious the threat is... and NOT going PUBLIC with the truth + audio recording?? UNBELIEVABLE😳😬 Absolutely unconscionable of Woodward to sit on that information for as long as he did😡 He could have possibly helped the public understand the Coronavirus threat sooner and maybe saved lives😞
Proud to say that I now support and subscribe to both Clay and Ann! We cancelled the Post back when the endorsement was killed, and I also stopped shopping at Whole Foods.
I $ubscribed to both on Election Day 2024 and it was the best decision ever -- good for you🤩 I hope more join up to support these worthy cartoonists in these dangerous times.
Things turned bad at the Post after Marty Baron retired. That just happened to coincide with Trump losing in 2020. I have no way to know whether there is a connection or not. I do wonder how he would've handled Bezos' instruction to not endorse a candidate at the last minute if he'd not retired and had stayed at the WaPo.
In either case, I'm not so hot on the WaPo these days. Nor on the NYT.
The Guardian appears to be pretty fair and above board. The Atlantic looks to be headed in the right direction. Paul Krugman has his own Substack now, as do a couple of pretty good former WaPo reporters/columnists. I'm thinking that I should support these efforts rather than a bunch of legacy media outlets who value something other than transparency and honesty. That's both with my money and my time slash brain space. I really don't think there's any law or genuine religious conviction that requires me to make wealthy people wealthier, especially when they are giving shit in return.
Had turned to MSNBC after watching a Christmas movie I'd taped. And found myself watching as President Carter is arriving at the Carter Center for memorial service. The military band just played Hail to the Chief, and, to my surprise, I started crying. For the good, honorable man who was often unjustly reviled. And for the country that elected a liar, a thief, a seditionist, a convicted felon who isn't fit to lick President Carter's boots. Every time I hear "Hail to the Chief" from now on, I'll cry for the country and the shame we'll bear for at least 4 years.
Thank you, Clay, for always speaking truth to power. As a subscriber to your Substack, I am glad that I can make comments and cheer you on. I really appreciated all the links that you put in this piece. It gave me a chance to really understand what was going on.
I have just subscribed to Ann’s substack. I’m sorry I didn’t know about her work before now. I hope she’ll keep cartooning on her own, as you have.
I listen to Robert Hubbell’s piece every morning. And I look for your daily editorial cartoon. These help me keep a level head. There are other resources as well, but both of you are my go-to.
Keep carrying on. We need you more than ever. I am trying to not have my head explode every day, as it did the last time the orange menace held power.
Thank you again for all that you do to keep all of us aware of the world around us and its pitfalls and it’s evil.
This cartoon may be your best yet depiction of That Creature. He devours insatiably, and it seems can never be appeased. I hope Ann finds a new journalistic home, one that still believes in actual journalism.
You already know I feel you and Ann have helped me stay steady and sane in this last quarter of my life. My subscription to the Post will be cancelled today. I love her work as much as I do yours, and admire her stance in this matter. I hope she finds a new home for her excellent work quickly! I am in fear for our fourth estate when so much ignorance seems to be in charge.
Connie Schultz wrote as she frequently does about family today. And about art. I’d been thinking about Sherrod Brown (he’s married to Connie for those who may not recognize her name) and others not in DC now. Washington & The Post always felt solidly blue. They are no longer. We’ve been infiltrated. And editorial & other cartoonists keep us sane. Well those who fear not. Thanks, Clay, for the cartoon and as much your words.
I would love to see a campaign to ask readers all over social media to draw cartoons on the same topic of Jeff Bezos cow-towing to Trump - to show solidarity with Ann!
This was my last straw😡 Now we know WaPo's cancelation of Kamala Harris' endorsement was *exactly* what it looked like, and Bezos' ridiculous, wordy justification afterwards a complete lie😠
Excellent blog and toon. Watching the Nazis take over the country is terrifying.

I'd be more pro-Woodward if he had to courage to publish his articles before his book. 1980s Woodward would be ashamed of 2020s Woodward.

We are now fifteen days away from the inaugural of a new DARK AGE and there is no hope of any light evolving in the immediate future.
I often need to search info on the truths from Clay's work. As was this one, I learn a lot more and often have an aha moment.
Just more proof that Democracy can't thrive in the same country as Billionaires. As if "The Gilded Age" wasn't proof enough.
❇️ PERFECTION ❇️
Thank you😘😍😭

If I hadn't already cancelled my subscription to WaPo, this would definitely have been the final straw. Always liked Ann's work.
