The correct citation is not the Temptations, but Norman Whitfield & Barrett Strong. The Temps were the performers, but not the song writers. Credit where it's due.
The version that I cited was from The Temptations, not the song writers. Whitfield and Strong wrote the original version for the Undisputed Truth. Then, Whitfield cut a new version EXCLUSIVELY for the Temptations which went on to be the number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and won 3 Grammy awards. So, while Whitfield and Strong were the songwriters, the Temptations made the song famous, and that is the version people know and relate to. Further, that is why it alludes to and is fitting for Clay’s toon. If I had put Whitfield and Strong, readers who be asking, “Who?” Right now though, they are probably asking, “Who gives a damn?”
In answer to your rhetorical question, the copyright holders give a damn. They may not receive the glory, but they receive royalties, which they deserve.
