Five cars of a CSX freight train derailed last Saturday, destroying at least four garages in a townhouse community on Cobblestone Drive. If you’re familiar with the area, Cobblestone is off Lafayette Street across from the 7/11. Mmmm, slurpees.

There is a large wall between the community and the train track.

The train didn’t contain any hazardous materials or harm anyone, but Gary the Goose is missing.

No, the train didn’t get Gary the Goose, at least we don’t think so, but I hope the new train conductor cat didn’t.

Gary is a goose, a rescue at that, who has been living along the Rappahannock River since at least 2017 but has been missing since July 5. What? Some people say he’s the most famous resident in Fredericksburg despite never drawing a political cartoon in his life. But, Gary has been the subject of art exhibits, appears on t-shirts and souvenirs of the city, and is visited and photographed daily.

Gary’s usually seen around the city docks but has been seen paddling his little goose legs along Fall Hill Avenue. He’s often the subject of a Facebook page about the river.

Honestly, this is the first time I’ve heard about Gary.

Gary was last seen hanging out in a political cartoon about trains.
