'Tis fine for Mitch McConnell to say it is "Utterly stupid and morally wrong" but he ... yes he, Mitch McConnell ... had the power to prevent this entire fiasco several years ago, but he let the felon walk free, refused to convict him on impeachment charges, thereby leaving the door open for the felon to return and destroy what was once good about this nation. I'm not sure that it's fair to apply 2026 standards to TR. He was the first president to meet a Black man in the White House. Albeit it was Booker T. Washington, who today is reviled for being an Uncle Tom who opposed Frederick Douglas. TR was a product of his times, but still offered some resistance to the revanchist Southerners. He fought the robber barons and broke up the largest trusts. Standard Oil, John D. Rockefeller's private fiefdom, was forced to break up its monopoly. So, too, Andrew Carnegie's US Steel. He supported the founding of the National Park System, although he did not oppose the construction of the Hetch Hetchy Dam and reservoir in Yosemite. He won a Nobel Peace Prize for leading the negotiations that resolved the Russo-Japanese War. He loved the natural world and was a source of funds and support for the American Museum of Natural History in New York. He coined some aphorisms that have served us well (until now): walk softly and carry a big stick. The worst things he did had to do more with the establishment of American colonial possessions: the Philippines, Puerto Rico and other Spanish possessions that were obtained during the Spanish-American War (under McKinley.) He supported major public works projects (the Panama Canal) and medical research that permitted them to go foreward (yellow fever, malaria management). He also became a beloved character in Arsenic and Old Lace and the model for the Teddy Bear.
In sum, I think TR's was a far better than average presidency, career and role model. While Wilson's racism was a disgrace to the nation, TR's was not virulent. It was, I think, ignorant, but not hostile.
As for today's cartoon, it's brilliant. Gets both a chuckle and a knowing smile. Tillis has been a go along, get along sort of a Washington politician for years. Now that he is retiring one can only hope that he will spend the next 6 or 8 months supporting ethics in public life. It would be great if he could bring himself to caucus with the Dems in the Senate, but extremely unlikely. More likely we'll see him fade away, arm in arm with Mitch McConnell.
Excellent summary of TR’s rather complex legacy. Yes, he was an expansionist colonialist. But his domestic policies were prescient and in some ways the trust busting and such kept America from the extremes that led to such strife in Europe.
Thom Tillis wins this week's humor award, with that quote that still has me cracking up, days after I heard it! All of a sudden a few Republicans rose to the surface (especially those who weren't affected politically by speaking out) and acted like Trump's slush fund (compensating Jan 6ers) was a bridge too far. It was still nice to see it.

This 'toon is awesome - when I heard the "stupid on stilts" I could not stop laughing. and then I researched it - apparently it goes back to philosopher Jeremy Bentham who said something like Nonsense on stilts. And then I discovered the Hillbilly slang connection - and you know I lost it!!!
Since you have been watching shows bout previous presidents, I forget if you have mentioned the "Death by Lightning" show about President Harding. As usual, lots of creative license but the subtext of what he stood for, what he did and the outcome of his presidency was interesting. The JP Morgan thing is also interesting and it made me think of the US oligarchs who influenced the last US elections….
I recently watched a George Washington show based on the biography by James Thomas Flexner. It was interesting but I choked up a bit when I did a comparison between George Washington and the grifter-in-chief. The founders and the authors of the US Constitution focused on treason and not trusting the government. They did not think there would be a criminal in the highest office of the land (the current toddler-in-chief is a convicted felon - a legal fact FYI for the MAGAists). They also did not consider the court might re-write the US Constitution to give the highest office in the land immunity from criminal prosecution.

NOTHING in history compares to Trump corruption! He even makes Cheney look good by comparison. I have no doubt that Trump's corruption in office has outshone all the corruption in all the years from the founding to the year 2000 put together!
