Roughs, Volume 260
Ding-Dong! Roughs are here!
I wrote this blog of rough before the stroke.
I know we just did a blog of roughs, but I want all unpublished roughs out of my queue before I leave the country next week.
This was drawn on September 27. I was trying to find something from the sniper scene in The Jerk, and apply it to the shooting at the Dallas ICE facility. I knew this wasn’t going to work, but I thought roughing it out might ignite an idea in my brain. It did not. But I think that it will spark something down the line. It’s such a funny scene.
I drew this on September 29. It’s on the MAGA guy who rammed his truck into a Mormon church, set it on fire, and then proceeded to shoot parishioners as they ran out of the building.
I have a guideline in my head to follow, and that is to draw a funny scene or situation instead of describing it. Sometimes, I start off forgetting that guideline.
But drawing something funny instead of just describing it can be difficult sometimes, like it was here. It’s hard to draw a church being thrown.
This was drawn on September 27, and I really liked it. I was working on the lettering when I got another idea for the subject, and they’re better than the Jerk/cans idea.
I decided to go with this one because it seemed simpler, and I liked the way it demonstrated ICE’s attitude and actions toward immigrants lately. But I wanted to go back in a day or two and finish the four-panel cartoon on this topic, but other things came up, and it got away from me.
This was drawn on September 29. It was roughed out in the evening, and I planned to do it the next morning.
This was drawn on September 30, the next morning. I didn’t go with either one.
I did this instead.
This was drawn on October 4. This was the idea, for my caricature to be proposed for the upcoming $1 Trump coin. I was pretty proud of the circle I drew free-handed, but the cartoon was lacking. It wasn’t funny enough. So I thunk about it for a bit…
…and came up with this one, which I think is so much better and way more fun for it. And the free-handed quarter circles still came out OK to my satisfaction.
This too was drawn on October 4, and around 1 a.m. I drew the cartoon way later that afternoon.
Lots of grass. So, so much grass. By the way, that’s NOT the Washington Monument. That’s the Mary Washington Monument, which is in Fredericksburg. Maybe I should have put a wig on it (I just thought of that). It’s not as tall as George’s, but it’s nice. The creative liberty here is that you can’t see it from the Fredericksburg National Cemetery. It’s on Washington Avenue, and you can’t even see it from either end of the street. It’s at her grave site, and at a park with a playground and tennis courts.
This was drawn on October 8. I wasn’t sure if the Beetlejuice part worked or not, so I left my brain’s lightbulb on. As you can probably tell, I copied and pasted Bondi here.
I copied and pasted the drawing into a new cartoon, and I kinda liked it. But then I started thinking too much about the squirrel thing…
And this is what we went home with. Which of the three do you like best?
And that's it. This will be the last one for a while until I get more feeling back in my right arm. I hope you enjoyed it.
Timelapse: It’s coming. Be patient.
