Thanks, Clay! You're on top of it again, and, yes, being pretty old I remember Watergate pretty well. Vance is an idiot who obviously DOESN'T know anything about Watergate, much less have the principles that so many did back then. This present troupe of idiots appear to lack such things as principles.

Lisa Hauck's avatar

Not just "appear to" lack principles, Susan, they completely are devoid of not only principles but even knowing right from wrong. An astounding level of weakness, intellect and morality generally reserved for rocks, minerals and/or dirt. Perhaps we need to rethink Darwin.

BigDaddy52's avatar

No, just give Darwin some help....

Not just appearance....

Somehow we are stuck with three or four 12-hour stories every day with these crooks. Excellent toon and commentary. Nixon signed some worthy stuff into law. Pretty sure Vance & 47 would hate all of it.

Signed, but opposed the legislation for the EPA. Nixon is too frequently lauded for his association with it, but the Dems had the votes for what would have been a humiliating veto override. Nixon was a lousy president from the get-go, with a chip on his shoulder. He opened China to the world economic community, operating under the false assumption that Liberal trade policy would encourage social liberalism and democracy. The Chinese have adopted Capitalism, but have somehow increased the suppression of political liberalism. He supported Lon Nol, whose neo-fascist replacement by coup d'état of the neutral Sihanouk led directly to the killing fields of the Khmer Rouge. Ask Chileans how they feel about Nixon. He supported the Apartheid regime in South Africa. There is absolutely nothing redeemable about the Nixon administration. RMN's "rehabilitation" requires ignorance of what he did in terms of civil liberties both domestic (e.g. surveillance and murder of Black Panthers, enemies lists) and in foreign affairs [Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador - the southern cone (Brasil fell to a US supported military coup in '64, but the others came later.)] I find it interesting that both RMN and DJT were mentored by Roy Cohn.

You are correct about Vance and his hatred for government regulators and agencies that are designed to be independent of partisanship and of the executive. His suggestion that the Pope should stay out of theological argument sounds so incredibly ignorant and stupid for a convert to Catholicism that one needs to redefine the definition of chutzpah.

Noxious Nixon was a mean spirited nasty POS. That he was chosen as Ike’s VP and then the Republican nominee for president is a warning about the prospects of Vance being elevated to being the REPUGNANTCANTS nominee in 2028. Given what Vance has already said it’s clear he would be worse than Nixon.

Somehow? It's the strategy promoted by Steve Bannon: flood the zone and something will get through. Americans are famously ignorant and disinterested in government and a lot has always passed beneath their notice. As a rule, they are non-ideological. American voters support candidates almost exclusively out of short-sighted self-interest. Low taxes and poor services. Close libraries, build new subdivisions without amenities (such as water and sewers, no sidewalks) and let the chips fall where they may) and let the wealthy spout populist lies and undermine the goals of solidarity, equality and social mobility that we were taught as children were out national creed.

Pre-written obit: "JD Vance Dead at __. JD Vance, best known for being the punchline of an apocryphal story about his having sexual relations with his grandmother's couch as a young man, has passed away. The couch story was never conclusively disproved. Vance also served as President Fonald Schlump's Vice President, and ran unsuccessfully to succeed him, placing after a discarded futon in ranked-choice voting."

VOTERS CHOOSE THE FUTON 🇺🇸

I was a young woman when Watergate hit the big time. I read the Post daily and cringe when I read what passes as a newspaper today. (Looking at you Bezos.)

Dear JD: Comparing Trump to Nixon isn't the flex you think it is. Go back to being sofa king.

Deborah solleveld's avatar

So much corruption is right. Who can keep up with it all?

Karyn Milos's avatar

OH, JEEZ.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I love your cartoons. 😂

And the blogs - the explanations are awesome!

Karyn Milos's avatar

Oh, yes. I love those, too. This was my initial reaction, right after seeing the cartoon, before I read the blog. 😂

I recently read that the junta sitting in the seat of power in DC is all over Yale university for the usual list of crimes they pin on upper education.

Wanna bet that JD is just pissed off that nobody greeted him with open arms when he was enrolled there?

Yale should be ashamed that they gave a degree to this ill-informed dimwit.

Richard's avatar

Oh man. I laughed out loud at this one! Well done.

Love your cartoon and your writing.

Great blog today. I remember how momentous the discovery, trials and Nixon leaving the White House was. Too bad people without values occupy the House and Senate.

Ada Bab's avatar

Perhaps JD’s couch explained to him about the realities of Nixon and Watergate and wet-0noodle Johnson received the message and started to panic because he spewed out a garbled message about the midterms and if the democrats won they would experience the basics of what Nixon’s corrupt team and corrupt GOP did. There will not be a 12-hour news cycle - there will be a reckoning of the corruption with subpoenas and corruption charges against everyone from the president down to the last member of the cabinet as well as 221 House and 53 senate members.

There goes that HOPE, springing again!

Awww don't pop my hope bubble!!!

Naw. I like some hope!

BTW - some great links on your substack!!

Many thanks. The wide range prolly concerns some people.

One of your best, Clay. Nixon and Watergate seem like "nothing here to see, folks" compared to Trump. Who back then could have imagined the depth of corruption we are now seeing?

Your blog really brought it up to date.

D. D. Wyss's avatar

Vancy Pants knows exactly how corrupt Nixon was, just like he knows how corrupt traitor tot is. He said as much back when he thought it was in his best interest to tell the truth about metamucillini.

Good one!

Tricky Dicky got his hands sticky while trying to rig the game.

That JD Vance is trying to advance Nixon is a crying shame.

I’ll take a chance and take the stance

That JD’s thinking is lame.
