My mom was scared, but I really didn't understand it, I was just miserable. Found out later that when she was a kid, a cousin died of measles at age 7. Several of my classmates had measles at the same time I did, but a few got lucky & managed to escape it. But in 3rd grade one of my Sunday school classmates got measles and she died. That was 60 years ago, we had been to her 10th birthday party a couple of weeks before she got sick. My son has only had chicken pox, as I got him vaxxed for MMR as soon as the pediatrician told me to. The chicken pox vax came out about a year after he had it - his entire kindergarten class woke up the day after graduation with a rash and fever - 30 kids all at the same time. Glad it wasn't measles, not sure what the odds would have been for how many would have been severely ill from measles in a big group like that.
I've had my COVID shots and all the offered boosters. I treat it like the annual flu shot. I wore a mask, did social distancing, took advantage of senior shopping hours at the grocery and generally followed all the recommendations made by Dr Fauci and the CDC. At work we staggered days for people in the cubicles so they weren't all there at the same time. Everybody was given a box of masks, a bottle of hand sanitizer and a canister of disinfectant wipes to use on door handles, the copier, the kitchen fridge and coffee pot - anything with a handle. We took care to not expose each other. It was hard on the people with kids in school, trying to do home schooling and working by remote when they could. But nobody in our office got sick, nobody died, although each one of us knows somebody that wasn't as fortunate - we lost grandparents, friends, neighbors - a handful who just didn't think they needed to be careful and thought we were all full of 💩. Guess they showed us by being intubated, suffering and dying alone, leaving their loved ones with horrible medical bills. Dr Fauci is a hero and Rand Paul isn't fit to lick his boots.

Our neighbor, one of the tenants on the farm, had a daughter get paralyzed from that. An old retired nurse who knew about her and knew about repatterning therapy came in every day and moved her arms and legs in a crawling pattern until she regained the ability to move around. Visited her a few years ago, she became a surgical nurse specializing in brain surgery. (Google "repatterning therapy for polio victims" if you're curious.)
Vaccines aren't perfect and nobody should call them perfect. They're just the best we have. Letting people get sick naturally, as the fools like Kennedy promote, results in vastly more bad outcomes.

For decades I wouldn't get a flu shot, because one of my down the street neighbors, a young guy only 3 or 4 years older than me (I was I high school), got the swine flu shot and ended up paralyzed. I was never sure what caused it, our families didn't socialize with each other much, not like next door neighbors do. But he was in a wheelchair the rest of his life and died before his 30th birthday. I never wanted a flu shot, it took my doctor, in 2018 to convince me. My daughter-in-law was expecting my first (and only) grandchild and my doc said I should not to plan on visiting unless I had a flu shot, DTap and a couple other boosters. I had to travel by plane and it was flu season, she convinced me the risk was very small, compared to catching something from fellow travelers in crowded airports and airplanes and then exposing my DIL. Only adverse reactions I've ever had to flu or covid vax is low grade fever about 100°F and a sore arm, both of which resolve in less than 24 hours. So I always get my shots on a Friday after work, then I can veg out on Saturday, sleep in, take Nyquil, eat chicken soup and be fine by Sunday. I do not remember getting the polio vax, or the sugar cube, but it's on my record card that my mom saved in my baby book, so I know they got whatever was available when I was growing up.
What Fauci was subjected to yesterday, though not surprising, was just disgraceful and disgusting. His Covid guidance, regarding masks, vaccines, and social distancing was invaluable, and I hung on his every word. While Trump was trying to steer us away from getting vaccines, Trump somehow managed to (Shh, don't tell anyone!) make sure to get one for himself.
The deaths that could have been prevented, but for his sheer negligence and misinformation, is staggering (as you have so aptly noted). My heart breaks just thinking about it.

There are not enough adjectives to describe my rage to hear people saying vaccines are useless and cause illness. I, and many like me, could have been spared numerous trips to the hospital and needless suffering. We were so grateful when the vaccines came along and now these dummies have fucked up a good system with their stupidity. Now we again need to fear Covid and the Flu because these fucknuts are putting us at risk by not only refusing the vaccines but also trying to force us to go without. As I've said before, Darwin should be allowed to prove his theory once again.
