Most are ignoring the dissent, which is huge and attempts (as so many of the "con" dissents do) to give instructions to the lawyers on the losing ("con") side on how to win over one or more of the dissenting justices.
A quote from electoral-vote, one of the few analytical sites I trust:
Just in case anyone currently leading the Republican Party missed the point, Thomas and Alito went to great pains to write out marching orders. Roberts' majority opinion is 7,801 words. By contrast, Alito's dissent is 11.594 words, while Thomas' is a staggering 27,477 words. Click on the link above to read them; they are a blow-by-blow rundown of the various (mostly racist) arguments against jus soli citizenship, like "these people aren't truly loyal to the United States" and "birthright citizenship encourages 'birth tourism.'" The two dissents also clue conservative lawyers in on what legal arguments they should be making, including that Kim Wong Ark actually supports the conservative point of view.
Oh, and as a bonus, on Monday, reporters noticed that Thomas was paying a visit to Capitol Hill, a place that Supreme Court justices should not often need to be. The Justice refused to explain why he was there, but pointedly demurred when asked if he was there to meet with anyone. A few Republicans claimed Thomas was there to see the House physician, which is... odd, if true.
When you get past 27K words, you're sliding past novelette and into novela status.
The current cons on the SCOTUS are nasty pieces of work. I'd like to point out that two of them have ABSOLUTELY committed ethical violations that would get them removed from any lower bench, and that they should be impeached and then put on trial for taking bribes and other felonies. I would be all about that, even if it failed in the Senate the effort would surely be a wake up call to bribe taking judges.
Also — in his ridiculous diatribe dissent he throws out what are at best policy points not legal points with such nonsense as “these people aren’t loyal…” and “birth tourism “…. The fact is these are both bullshit but more importantly they have nothing to do with the legal / constitutional question. Thomas and Alito 1) cannot read the constitution for what it says and 2) go way beyond the writ of the court to delve into matters totally inappropriate to the constitutional issue. Their extreme partisan bias is on display.
The Supreme Court upheld Birthright Citizenship, which is too bad for our Country, but we can easily make it up in Congress through Legislation, with the support of the President, that has now been determined during this process. No long and unwieldy Constitutional Amendment is necessary! Congress should start TODAY to work on ending expensive and unfair to our Country, Birthright Citizenship. They will have my Complete and Total Support! President DONALD J. TRUMP
* * * * *
Didn't take the cons long to get through Kavanaugh and his ranting about 8 USC 1401(a). Per Kavanaugh, there's no such thing as the 14th.
Not so much Trump, just political judges doing what they think will help Republicans and hurt Democrats. Trump just makes it very easy to get cases before the court, because he signs XO's nobody else would even try. Trump doesn't care about looking like a fool, because his ego can't ever visualize such a thing.
Wait. Whut. I thought a "textualist, originalist view" was a conservative take on the Constitution. Then again, since when does Mike Johnson have to make sense. 😏
Those "textualists and originalists" have selective vision and serious learning deficits. They don't read or comprehend the entirety of the 2nd Amendment, only the part about bearing arms. Their preference would be to pretend that there are NO Amendments. So Clarence and Amy would wish themselves out of the current time-line continuum on the SCOTUS and imagine that they are WASPy white men. ( I wonder what kind of dysmorphia they have?) Alito's ancestors wouldn't be given immigration status or citizenship. In fact a good chunk of the current white population of the USA wouldn't be here unless they were WASPs. So the USA would have no Catholics, Jews, Italians or Irish. Or rich oligarchs from Muslim, Buddhist or Hindu dominant countries. Indigenous folks would have been exterminated by displacement, disease and starvation, but black folks would be here because the WASPy MAGATs need slave labor. That's the world that makes sense to the conservative members of SCOTUS, Congress and the regime. In the meantime they'll make do with keeping the socio-economic stratification and divisions in place with rulings like Citizens United and giving POTUS immunity since they don't have the numbers, political clout or ability to change the Constitution or Amendments (if they try to follow the actual laws of the land).
Excellent work on SCOTUS & bratty 47. Feeling very sad about Paul. Loved his toons (the Daily Cartoonist reprinted his on SCOTUS & racism which was perfectly Paul).
Amazing that orange snake doesn't remember (know?) that Vance's wife was born of immigrant parents. Indeed, as far as I have seen, they're still not citizens. Three of snake's kids were born of women who weren't citizens at the time of the kids' births. What about Rubio? His parents weren't citizens when he was born.
Side point: dual citizenship should be a no-no. The oath you take to become a citizen specifically says you give up all allegiance to other countries. If you hold dual citizenship, you haven't given up allegiance to the other country.
Unless like some countries where you are a dual citizen, you are required to use the passport of your country of origin if you enter that country. Like South Africa - if you are a South African who is a naturalized US citizen but visit South Africa, you have to use your South African passport to enter. Do you think Elon tossed his South African passport???
It depends on your country of origin whether or not you need to re-enter using the passport of that country. You don't have to use the passport of your country of origin if you're just planning to visit your non-USA country of birth for a short time and will not work there while using your US passport during your visit. The USA does require you to use your USA passport to board international flights departing the USA or to embark on flights returning to the USA. The life of citizens and residents of more than one country became more complicated once the Turd started his immigration crackdown. Countries have retaliated by instituting passports and visa requirements to mirror the attitude of the USA towards their citizens. One of my cousins has citizenship in 3 countries and permanent residency in a 4th country. Traveling has became a complicated strategy of which documents to show getting on the plane, which to show upon arrival, which to show while traveling through the country and which to show to get on the return trip or to go elsewhere (we have family all over the planet that he visits). Elon will never give up his South African citizenship unless it is stripped from him because of treason. I wish all affected countries would do that, and then lock him up as a stateless convict in some black-site somewhere in the frozen tundra of outer Mongolia, as a nasty footnote of history (along with Stazi-Steve, The Turd, Couch-Boy, Marcolito & the SCROTUS). We'll compensate Mongolia nicely.
You're right. My apologies to Mongolia. I love their BBQ and buffet so I should not burden them with our problem. Maybe he and his family can be one of the first test monkeys/guests on Elon's first trip to Mars. Given how well those rockets have been launched in the past this could provide massive relief for many countries including the USA.
Traitor tot is clearly having a tantrum over his defeat by the decision of the corrupt, but not entirely over the cliff SCROTUS. His FIFA Peace Prize is in danger of falling off the desk, but at least the ketchup bottle is momentarily still intact.
The lack of consistency with some conservatives is astounding...per "speaker" Johnson “a textualist, originalist view” of the 14th Amendment is incorrect because the situation has changed, but “a textualist, originalist view” of the 2nd Amendment is the only possible solution to the problem of guns... See: https://joycevance.substack.com/p/beyond-the-headlines-the-supreme
Mikey Johnson is a little sniveling weasel who construes everything in terms of how it enhances or maintains the magahood… truth and consistency are tertiary to that…
If you are born of an American you are an American. This is what allowed people like the Mexican born Mitt Romney to run for president. Also, John McCain who was born in Panama. And Barrack Obama no matter where he was born.
I also would add that the political cartoonists, who make us laugh and smile at human foibles are far more valuable to the community at large than those who misinform (today, as usual, and Al Goodwyn and Gary Varvel) or, apparently, receive their messaging from the RNC by fax (Lisa Benson, Kelley) or those who give knee-jerk thoughtless responses (as talking points) not to events and with no nuance (Henry Payne, Ted Rall, Michael Ramirez). The latter group will not be missed. Just as I do not miss the perspective of racists and sexists like the late Al Capp. I would give a sigh of relief were I never to see anything produced by these anti-progressive (pace followers of the insincere vanguardist Rall. Am I being sufficiently bipartisan?)
Sometimes I wonder if some cartoonist even live in the current world. Their cartoons as from another reality...I sometimes look at Michael Ramirez just because but wow, sometimes he is way out there!! As are some of the others you mention....your comment says it all.
The exact date when things changed was the date Rush Limbaugh was invited to spend the night in the Lincoln bedroom by then POTUS Bush (Sr).
Limbaugh instantly converted from being a conservative gadfly to being all Republican all the time and started lying about everything imaginable, hiding behind the "entertainment" shield (which should be removed or modified). With his huge success, others followed, and we are now living in the sewer that resulted from that invitation.
Good toon (as usual).
It should have been 9-0. The fact that it wasn’t is a five alarm fire. We have our work cut out for us in the midterms and beyond.
Most are ignoring the dissent, which is huge and attempts (as so many of the "con" dissents do) to give instructions to the lawyers on the losing ("con") side on how to win over one or more of the dissenting justices.

Clearly Injustice Thomas has too much time on his hands
Yet again Trump demonstrates knowledge of U.S. government that a 4th grader would be flunked on if given as an answer
From his lying "truth" account:

I'm thrilled with the SCOTUS decision, but shocked that they didn't ALL agree on it! There are way too many bad actors in that bunch. :(
Gee…. Maybe some are just TOTAL TRUMPHUK TOADIES!!
Not so much Trump, just political judges doing what they think will help Republicans and hurt Democrats. Trump just makes it very easy to get cases before the court, because he signs XO's nobody else would even try. Not sure I’d give them so much credit — they’ve gone way beyond doing what they think will help Republicans… for example the “immunity” decision…
Wait. Whut. I thought a "textualist, originalist view" was a conservative take on the Constitution. Then again, since when does Mike Johnson have to make sense. 😏
The current "conservative" take on the Constitution seems to be the return of the Articles of Confederation.
No shit. 😐😳 So much WTF.

Also, this whole mini-essay is very well articulated. Kudos!
Thank you. Sometimes the neurons work together well even late at night. 😊
Agreed. It's just funny to see the type of conservative who'd normally embrace that view suddenly sling it as an insult against damned libruls. 😂

You are wrong about dual citizenship.

Small things sometimes have huge consequences.
The irony burns! If birthright citizenship was as Clarence Thomas wants it, he probably wouldn't be an American citizen today.
Let’s deport Clarence anyway — on general principles!
Maybe — just maybe — the REPUGNANTCANTS and especially Trumphuk hisself talk out of both sides of their cloaca! The term “forked tongue” seems apt…
